Your First Period: The Main Event
Whether you’re waiting for puberty to hit, or about to get your first menstrual flow, Big Sister Luna is here to answer all your questions! So if you’re a first time flow-er this blog is just for you.
So, Luna, what is a period?
Your period (aka menstruation) is your body's way of preparing for the future. Your period comes monthly, and occurs by regularly discharging blood from the inner lining of the uterus through to the vagina.
When will my period happen?
Everyone’s flow is different – some get their period early and some later, but both are completely normal! Most people's periods begin between the ages of 9 and 15.
Signs your period is coming:
Be on the lookout for white, yellow or dark red discharge in your underwear, cramps and mood swings!
What does a period look like?
Period blood isn’t always bright red, it can be pink, brown or even dark red! It’s normal for your first few periods to be a little unpredictable, and your period will likely get heavier after the first few times!
Period Protection:
When it comes to period protection, no one does it like Luna! You’ve got a few options but it’s all about what makes you feel comfy! The most common choices are:
Period Briefs: Looks like regular underwear but absorbs your period! Reusable & comfy.
Pads: Stick them in your undies to absorb blood, then throw them out when done!
Reusable Pads: Like regular pads, but washable. Better for you and the planet!
Tampons: A small cotton plug you insert inside the vagina; these can be hard to use at first and take a bit of getting used to! So, we recommend period briefs and pads until you get the hang of having a period!
Menstrual Cups: A soft, reusable silicone cup that you insert inside the vagina that collects menstrual blood. These are great to use when swimming, but again can be tough to use at first!
Where can I get period protection?
You can purchase period protection online or in store at your local grocery store like Woolworths! Ask a parent to help you purchase, if that’s not an option, a teacher at school or a friend who already has their period is a great place to start.
So, your period has arrived – what now?
It’s normal to experience some cramps, mood swings, and feel a bit tired when your period starts. This is a great time to do something nice for yourself! Remember, it’s not normal to be in a lot of pain, so if your cramps get a bit out of control you should see a doctor.
Cramp Survival 101
Period cramps? Annoying but totally normal, here’s how to help you feel better:
Heat Pack: A warm heat pack on your tummy = instant relief
Stretch It Out: Light yoga or walking can help minimise your cramps (yes, really!)
Stay Hydrated: Get out that emotional support water bottle, drinking more water can help with bloating and cramps!
Snack Smart: Avoid too much salty or sugary food, fruit and dark chocolate are your BFF’s here!
Pain Relief: If your cramps are really bad, talk to a parent or your Doctor about safe pain relief options.
Bust some common period myths
“You can’t swim on your period” False! With the right protection like Period Swim or a Menstrual Cup you totally can.
“You lose a lot of blood on your period” Nope! It’s actually only around 2 – 4 tablespoons across your period week.
“Periods should be super regular” Not always! Your first few cycles might be irregular, that’s totally normal.
Final Thoughts
Your period is just another part of growing up, no big deal! Everybody is different, so take your time figuring out what works for you. If you ever have questions, talk to a trusted adult or friend and remember, you got this!
